As stated above also, Chinese does not at all represent the primitive form of language so far as it is known to us, Primitive languages possess an extraordin ary wealth of inflections and hardly any fixed word-order, and although the Bolence of language has not yet been able to pierce the gloom that lie beyond this primitive state and tell us how this wealth of in fleo- tione arose, it now points very de- - finitely to progress in language being towards the dropping of inflections and the adoption of fized word-order. Chinese is thus not the first seed of language, but the full bloom, marred fortunately by a system of writing which has assisted in the growth of dialects and prevented the real unification of the people on the sound basis of language."
