The Wheel and the Road. At the meeting of the Insti'u- tion of Automobile Engineers recently, Colonel Crompton, the engineer to the London Road Board, read a highly instructive Par upon the matual relation ship of the wheel and the roari. At the outest he omphasised the unfairness of the demand pre- times made to the effect that mig banically propelled vobieles-hould be subjected to special taxation. Such a tax on transport would, he said, retard progress, and was anjastifiod in view of the merely temporary charactor of tho exist- ing drawbacks to motor traffic. In the meantime, Colonel Cromp- on suggested that much might be done to reduce road wear by the adoption of larger wint els. Many commercial motor vehicles, he said, had stoel wheals generally 40 in.. to 1 in. in diameter, and such wheels injure the reads VOLY much more than rubber-tyred wheels of the rame size, la fuct, to be equivalent to a rubber-tyred wheel, Colonel Crompton said that a steel-tyred wheel should be at least three times as much in dia metar.
