Naturally those interested in the shipbuilding industry are watching keenly for every in- dication which will throw light ou the "question as to how long the present abnormal activity will continue, and the return issued this week by Lloyd's Register, (saysEngineering" of April 11) indicating that there are 94,000 tons more merchant shipping in course of construction in the various yards in the United King- dom than was the case three months ago will be regarded as satisfactory. It must not be as- sumed, however, that this result is altogether due to a development of demand for shipping, "far less a promise of its maintenance. With the recent great advance in wages to operatives in the ship- building yards, and the increased |cost of all materials due to higher wages in steel and ancillary works, the prices quoted by builders for new shipping bave had to be very greatly increased. Another contributive cause is the increased charge due to recent logialation.
