comparing The United States and the British Isles the engineering observer must at once be imprese- ed by the fact that the majority of the small American towns can boast of a central electricity sup ply station, whilst the number of British towns with similar popu- lations thius provided is small in proportion. As in the British stations, steam is the motive" power in the majority of. cases, the gas or oil-engine driven plant being the rare ex- British ception. Unlike the stations, however, the American central stations have made proot- ically no effort, up to the pres lent, to adopt a form of stand-by unit which is finding great favour in the former-namely, the Diesel type of oil engine. This prime mover is eminently suited to cen- tral station stand-by service for reasons which have been stated too oflen to require repetition. The number of Diesel engine manufacturers in The Uni ted States is smaller than might be expected from a nation whose enterprise is not usually behind that of other countries; but there are sound onsons for this state of affairs. The engines and boilera.. used in the average American. central station of small and med- ium capacity are not of a very costly type, and they are simple in construction and maintenance; the operating expenses are not, More- therefore, very heavy. over-aud this is the crux of the question-coal is cheap; so that when everything is taken into consideration it will be re- alized that the American central etation engineer will have little to gain by adopting a prime upkeep charges of which, at the present stage of its development, are considerably in excess of those for the steam plant, whilst the fuel may or may not be cheaper. than soal, according to the looa-.. tion of the plant and the temper of the great oil-supply corpora tions. Notwithstanding these facts, the American oil-engine has made
