The meotings most important of these took place on the 17th inst, when it was stated that the mediation by the Chamber of Commerce pro bably would be fruitless. It wOG therefore proposed that the inter- ested merchants should either approach the China Merchants 8. N. Company for co-operation or establish an independent steam- ship company. The latter scheme met with great approval, for in a short time... over one million dollars was pledged for shares in the new company.
