The aut fower trade in the United States amounts to about £4,000,000 a year, and it is com- puted that the discovery will tend to reduce the bill by over $1,000,-

Condemned Navy Food. Nearly three handred turkeys have been condemned by food- inspectors at New Hampshire. These had been intended a food for the naval prisoners on the occasion of George Washington's birthday. Dr.000 a year, A. D. Melvin, head of the animal industry bareau of the department, declared that the seizure" was made in connection with the inspection of naval food which has been in progress for the past three years. In that time Dr. Melvin said a considera- ble amount of bad mest, espe- cially cold-storage chicken and turkey, had been found. The in- spection is part of the plan to improve the quality of the food served aboard ships of the navy.
Harvard and the Navy. An interesting letter, signed "Disappointed Grad:" appeara in the New York Evening Post," on the subject of Harvard and the Navy. According to the writer, the Navy wants college men, but certain undergraduates of the Radical wing object. The following quotation speaks for iteoll:-
"A naval officer makes a speech in the Union. A placky '84 man. protests, and is hissed down by the discriminating youth who are eagerly listening to the war pro paganda. Whereupon, other un- dergraduates, never properly im. bued with the Harvard doctrine of social taboo, whereby if you talk out in meeting you are not a gentleman because it isn't good taste, intimate in letters to the "Crimson' that if our colleges mean anything they mean places where youth are taught ideals a trille more contemporary than militariam. Even the labour unions are sophisticated enough to seo that.
..
"The scheme of the navy is typically Harvardian. Our un- degraduates are not to suffer the sonatamination of mixing ("mess ing") with the farmer lade from the Middle West who were lured into the navy by means of posters compared to which the blandish- ments of the patent medicines are honesty itself, and who are now doing time until they can honourably got out and start earn- ing their livings in some produc- tive occupation. No, the Harvard men are, as any one who knows Harvard could have guessed, to have "separate quarters."
As one who has enjoyed the "special privilego" of a Har- vard education, and as a mem- ber of more than one." exolusive club' (of which I am by un mesas

Three kinds-lilac, lilice, and sweet peas-suffer from the solu- tion, while three others-mar- guerites, chrysanthemums, and tulips-deriveno apparent benefit. All the others live longer, and in some
cases their life as out flowers in trebled,
Great care is, however, neces- sary in securing the right solu- tion. Not less than 2 per cent., and not more than 20 per cent., of sugar in the water was found to be the outside limit..
With fifteen varities, of carna- tions, a 15 per cent. augar solu- tion was helpful. With forty-five yaristics of roses; a solution of from 7 to 10 per cent. of sugar prolonged life.
