determination to withdraw so early from the labors of your useful administration at Macao, where it is well known that Your Excellency's honorable and straightforward policy had made great progress in effecting many reforms important to the interests of humanity in general, and specially to the fine interests of Macao.
As I am about to sail for Europe in a few days, I cannot hope to renew with your Excellency's Successor the very agreeable personal relations which have always existed between Your Excellency and myself. I have no doubt, however, that Your Successor will find great support and much personal gratification in cultivating friendship with the community of both Hong Kong and Macao.
