centuries from the simple whorf outside old Fort William where now-a-days is the Port Office. This line of Jetties is cut off from expansion northward by the float- bridge, and can only expand immediately south at the expense of the amenities of the great Maidan, or Park. The Dock area is further away to the south beyond the Maidan and the import merchants hold on grimly to the conveniences of the Jetties for ship deliveries and resist proposals for handling imports at the Docks. This attitude is un- derstandable, and it is, of coures, reasonable that all possible steps should be taken to facilitate the rapid handling of goods over the Jetties; but it must be apparent that, with the coniinnons ex- paasion of the trade of the port, a point must soon be reached when it will be impossible to handle the total quantity of imports, and arrangements must be made for receiving such gools at the Docks, or Jetties lower down stream, A suggestion has, we understand, been mado that the situation might be mat by having a very Lrge warehouse in the commer cial area and railing import goods thereto from the Dooks or down stream Jetties.
