Investigation After Gambling Rald.
An interesting matter is at prosens being investigated by the Shanghai Police. The osse arose out of a gambling raid which took place on the 19th înst. I, was brought before Mr. Hadley the American 8888ssor, in the Mixed Court on the following day, Sergeant Thompson was one of the foreigners who was interest- ed in the case, and the evidence of a Chinees detentive was to the
effect that the Lead man of the gambling house, who was sent enced to two weeks' imprison- ment, was searched in the Bub bling Well Station, and from him was taken Tls. 10 and $5","
Mr. Hadley looked at the charge sheet and found that such an Amount was not stated as having been taken from accused. On socused, when he was searched in Court, was found only a few tén cent pieces and coppera, thiob did not amount to anything like the sam named. Questioned by Mr. Hadley, it was stated that Bergeant Thompson was not in court, nor had that amount of money been sent down.
The accused man said that ho thought the court ought not. to confiscate all the money he had in his possession as it was the property of his employer and re- presented rents, etc. Mr. Hadley, though he sentenced the man to two weeks' imprisonment, caused investigations to be made.
