COMPANY MEETING..

(Continued from page 5). The information given us af Branch Premises in course of erection or extension in banking and commercial centres in widely separate parts of the world avid ences the expanding business and enterprise of the Bank, and it is Batisfactory to know that from all A places in various countries favour. Able reports have been received with good prospects for the pre- sent year. This, you will agree, is a very pleasing announcement. (Applause,)

BD,

There is one other point of outstanding interest, the all im portant matter of the loan negat iations at Peking. We have all followed with deep interest the progress of these negotiations in which the Bank is so largely concerned. We must all be glad to learn from the chairman that the terms of a final agreement bave at last been arranged, and' that final settlement now only resta on diplomatic decisions.. This being to the resources of diplomacy, to find the means of early settlement of the outstanding difficulties and ultimate satisfac tory agreement between Chins and tho Powers concerned. Given this solution in the near future, there is every indication from, all that the obairman has so lavidly set before as, of our seeing markedly prosperous trading times ahead, embracing extended development of the resources of China, for the undoubted benefit of her people and incidentally of all trading with her.

THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 2

CASE REOPENED.

"A Story of Lost Macintoshes,

The case was re opened this morning, before Mr Ở. D. Mel- bourne, at the Police Court, in which two Chinese were charged with attempting to steal two macintoshes from Mra Pellow's house in Humphreys Avenus, Kowloon.

The hearing of extra evidence was done on sa application by Mr J. H: Gardiner, who appeared on behalf of one of the defen- dants.

Evidenco as to good character was given and a Chinese, who was called, deposed that he did not see the defendants enter Mrs Pellow's house. He only saw them walking slowly and later saw a crowd gather, but for what reason he did not know. When he got up to them, the crowd dispersed..."

Mr. Gardiner-That is all the evidence I can give at present.

Mr. Melbourne:-The evidence we trust is that be eaw the defendants walking slowly, then a crowd gathered, and before he got up to them the crowd disapp sared. These men were going out to buy dog's meat, and there were Swatow, Amoy and Foochow- only two or three mon in the street. No one else was in eight and one man ran away; apparent- ly this is not the man who ran away. The evidence is that these men were in Humphreys Avenue, and they walked very slowly, in front of the lady's houss. She only went upstairs for two! minutes, and, oncoming down, found the macintoshes had gone. These men are apparently of good character.
