The Housing Problem. The Portuguese community have been hit hard by the boom, but, happily, there is some relief in store for them if we may so judge the efforts being made to promote the Kowloon Garden City and Mr. Ede's housing scheme at Wongneiobeong. There is, however, a class for whom little or nothing has so far been attempted. We allude to middle and poorer claen Europeans, who, unaccustomed to live in what is commonly termed the "Chinese flat," are daily find- ing the conditions of life in Hong- kong becoming more, and more intolerable. There is no blink ing
this fact. Many are willing
to put up with the conditions in the faith that, as they say, "we are here for only a few years any. how," but there are other who, having reared families in the co- lony, have little prospect of re- turning to the Homeland in a few years." Their case is excep tionally hard, and it is not fair to nor good for their offspring to bo brought up s amid surroundings and companiships which can only be compared to slumdom. Cannot something be done to alleviate the lot of these people?
