It seems probable that the Clyde shipbuilding tonnage for 1912 will be larger even than that of last year, which was the highest on record. Up to the end of October 229 vossale of | 520,318 tons had been launched on the river, ne compared with 219 vessels of 491,404 tons in the first ten months of 1911. The total output for 1911 consisted of "that over 110,265 tons will have to be added during November and December if past achieve menta are to be surpassed. Aå the total for December always in- cludes a considerable amount of tonnage which has been shipped abroad during the year and is not included in previous returns, it ie praotically certain that the work of the 12 months will show an improvement on that of last
year...
Motor Coasting Vessels, Five of the 18 coasting vessels which were ordered some time ago by the Coasting Motor Ship- ping Company, Glasgow, have now been completed, says the "Times," but as one was wrooked on Ielay recently there are only four in service. The Innismurray, built at Alloa, underwent trials on the Forth recently, and attained a mean speed of 7.75 knots, when loaded, on four runs on the measured mile with a fuel. consumption of about six gallons of crude oil an hour. This vessels is fitted with a Beardmore semi- Diesel engine of 130 b.b.p. Of the others, three-including the one which was wrecked-have Bolinders engines and one a Beardmore pure Diesel, They range in size from 140 tons dead weight to 400 tons, and they are running between the Forth and Clyde Canal ports, the West Highlands, and the small ports on the North of Ireland which larger shipa do not touch.
Electricity in Ships.
A leaflet issued by the Diesel Engine Company (Limited) deals with the use of their engines în ships for the purpose of generat- ing electricity for lighting purposes, and the suggestion is made that a plant of this descrip- tion placed on deck would obviate the risk of the lights falling in the event of disaster, a risk that obtains when the electrical plant derives its motive power from the boilers should the boiler or engine rooms be flooded, Other advan ages claimed for a plant of this description, in addition to economy in working costs, are that the engine may be started in the evening to run throughout the
