A Modern Theatre Wanted. But we realise that a desire. exists for the erection of a theatre here, and there is certainly great need of one which yields comfort and accommodation to its pat- rous and revenue to its promotera. We learn that Oriental Theatri- cal Co.-which brought to the east the Forris Hartman Co. has already taken the initial steps inregard to the construc- tion of a suitable theatre in Manila. The neighbouring city has first to demonstrate that it can afford to maintain a first class playhouse. The plan is to bring out three or four com panies annually to the Orient, and if the
venture proves
success, then the next step will ho the planning of a theatre. necessary to attract and necom- modate other first class compani- os. Probably there is a keener and healthier desire for theatre-going in Manila than exists in Hong- kong. The conditions in the two cities are not the same. We have our winter season for the theatre and that alone.

GOOD HOUSEWIVES. Look about your home as you read this advertise- ment.
Its looks clean, undoubtedly. But don't get the idea that you can judge simply by the appearance of things.
The surface may be clean, but still there may be a scum of soap left from the wash water; also soap sticking in cracks and crevices ready to gather dirt; while sinks and toilets and drains may have deposits which soap cannot thoroughly remove.
And wherever there is dirt, germs can breed; and flies and vermin will come.
So make your house actually clean, both for the satisfaction which cleanliness brings and a safeguard against disease.
Use UN, the powerful disinfectant. Put two tablespoonfuls into a pait of water and see what oleansing, purifying wonders it will accomplish.

which is one of the objects that strikes the traveller on arrival at Manila. From the bureau are con- stantly issued the reports, statistics, and enthusiastic ao counts of commercial progress, but Mr. Bruek makes the follow- ing qualifications: Whoever examines into the reality of the case will not fail to detect the tone of exaggeration which per vades these official advertise ments. It is true that progress.hes. been made, but the progress is not so great as these reports would have us believe..

The Coinsge Question. For years the Hongkong Goy- erament, assisted by the British - Minister in Peking, had sought in vain to induce the Canton 'au- thorities to restrict the output of subsidiary coins from the Mint in order to rehabilitate the coinage. A short experience has proved that Hongkong will do better by relying on its own efforts. The decision of the three important concerns named above to follow.
the practice which obtains at the Post Office and other Government revenue offices must result in making Chinese subsidiary silver unpopular in the Colony, and this must greatly assist the re- habilitation of Hongkong coins, Without probibitory legislation

copper coin we can soarcely anticipate, however, that this re- habilitation of subsidiary silver will be achieved as rapidly as in the case of the copper coinage, for the money changers will be, all the more eager to supply their unsuspecting customers with "small change," Chinese coin because of the extra profit it will be possible for them to make on on the transaction, But if the new regulation adopted by the principal passenger-carrying con ceras has the result which may be confidently predicted for it, we do not suppose that the Govern- tend to ment will be slow to soreign subsidiary silver bibitory legislation now fully applied to foreign copper
