whilst it is a fact the present system works better than the old, because under the latter, extensive corruption of the Police always flourished along with practically unlimited Gambling, and now, whether it seemed a probable result or not, and whether it be agreeable or not to writers in the journal in question, that unless it be one have, now suspected, and soon to be examined, there has not been and is not now under existing arrangements a single gaming haunt of illegal character in Hong Kong, whilst certainly there is not and can be no Police corruption.
It is true that the article in question concludes by stating - "we are informed that Public gaming is going on unrestrained in a variety of places and that their 'existence is thoroughly well known' to many of the Police." I believe such information to be wholly untrue, and that it was ever given, as stated, to the writer, I hold to be highly improbable. False personal assertion to that effect gives it slight support, and would procure little credence from the intelligent portion of the Community.
