This will accommodato very large· liners, as may be judged from the fact that the entrance lock is 800- ft. in length and 100ft. wide, A dry dock is to bo built which untimately will councct the new South Albert Dock and the old Albert Dock. All around the most modern facilities for loading, discharging, strong, and forward- ing freight are to be installed. Tilbury Dock is to bo provided. with greater accommodation, in- cluding now quays for the use of tho big ocean linors which go thora. The London Dock is to be improved for the use of coasting aad Continental trading. Old as- commodation is to be modernised. The first contracts cost something | like £2,350,000.

Combustion in Oll and Ɑng- Engines.

Many experiments have been mado during the past three years to check the rapidity of the ox: plosions in oil-engines, and one method adopted, says "Engineer- ing," was to let a little water be sucked in with the charge. This greatly increases the ease of run- ing, and made higher compros- sions possible. without danger of preignition. The National Gas- Engine Company use, inetoad of water, a diluont consisting of the cooled axhansi-gason. In this way the rapidity of combustion. with rich gases, such ne coke oven gon, is reduced, and higher com- pressions are practicable. The effect of water is perfectly well- known, but in general it lowers the economy. In the case of petrol-engines, howover, which aro often run with mixtures too rich, giving rise to temperatures of about 2.000 deg..Cont., it might increase the coonomy to add moisture to the charge, and this plan is being thoroughly examin- ed. More than a very small ad- dition, however, reduces the economy.

The C.P.R.. Cruiser-Liners. Plans of the cruiser-linors pre- parad originally at tho request of the Canadian Pacific Railway by Mr. Edward Bath, the English naval architect, have boon on ex-' hibition at Montreal. They are for vessels 700ft. long with a 30ft, draught and a speed of 24 knots. The vessels would have have tur
