THE
SCIENCE OF ADVERTISING.
Advertising is both a science and an art. We
have studied that science.
Do you know the ART?
Can you write a catchy ad.?—very few can.
A good ad. is one that catches the eyes, then
holds the attention.'
Can you do it? We can.
Let us write your ads. for you, insert them in any paper you fancy, but let us write them for you, we like it, that will be` our recompense. Choose your paper, put them in, watch results. ADVICE:-Insert them in the paper with the largest circulation-that is the secret of judicious advertising.
All the papers have the largest circulation, if you doubt it, ask them; then tell us, what they tell you.
The other fellow is losing all the money, True; that is the reason he is able TO KEEP
UP the advertising rate !'
THEY KNOW that the other fellow is losing money hand over fist, If YOU doubt it, ask them, they will tell you candidly; "it is quite trus.".
The cheapest ad. is the dearest. Why ? do you know your business and ask why ?. Do you advertise because of friendship? No? To reach the people ? Yes, yes, that is the reason and it can only be accomplished by
· advertising in the paper that has the largest circulation, But if they all have the largest circulation, I must advertise in all the pa- peru ↑ Quite

German Machinery in China. There are doubtless many factors that contribute to this preponderance of German mach inery, but no one will admit that the preponderance is inevitable. Gotoris paribus, British machinery, should find as ready a market in China as Gorman--what is the oanse, then, of the balance, shift ing over so docisively to the aide of the Teutons?: One probable, if not certain, cause is the much more energetio way in which the German dealers in machinery and engineering requisitisites in Ohlma pusti thair wares. Some of the mothods adopted may be altogether foreign to British merenntile procedure, but this cannot be mid of the

The man on the spot can always gain an advan tage, and the differences between tanderol prices are now often so small that this advantage having been gained by tlle German firm, it will suffice to turn the scale in their favour. Expert travelling agents visiting the important towns in the interior of China. woald, we are convinced, bring to British firms their fir share: of the orders that now go to

of security and permanence. Clubdom might be extended, s that life even in the new territory might have its joys as well 28 its sorrows. The former are many, for yachting, fishing, pionicing, shooting, uro indulged in now, and tho sorrows many be summed up into the one word mosquitoes. Those inquisitive and irritating peste are the bane of some people's existence. Pro- bably science and development may make war on these. Ip course of time the mosquitoes whigh hold high revels during the summer months may bo lefied by the construction of screened rooms, but we are assured. that the development of the new territory would be hastened if the Government directed atten+ tion to the cultivation of interest. on the part of the "man in the -treet" in the land which ories aloud for population.

Since then our hende have been to some extent tied by the Anglo-Bussian agreemont. By this both parties, in conformity with the admitted principle of Chinese suzerainty over Tibet, agreed, not to enter into direct relations with the Tibetans except through the intermediary of the Chinese Government. But we also have a treaty with China, by which the Chinese Government pledged it self neither to annex Tibetan territory nor to interfere in the administration of the country. The latter part of the compact has has unquestionably been broken, and a good deal might be said in favour of the anggee tion reported to have been put forward by Sir, John Jordan that the time has come to revise the Anglo-Chinese Convention 1006, It may turn out, however, that the vital pointe in our poli matio intervention merely have been attained without dr the Dalai Lama's recovery of hi old position.
