Inspector Grey, who was sent to Europe for the express purpose of looking after the recruiting for the Police, has written to the Captain Superintendent. He has wholly omitted to state what agreement was made with those men, or whether any advance and how much was received.
Under these circumstances, I have been somewhat embarrassed as to the course most expedient to follow, but have "ad interim" authorized payment to them for the month of January at the rate of $40, being the rate of pay that I understood before leaving London was offered to Members of the Metropolitan and City Police, if any were found willing to join and could be spared by the heads of either of those Forces.
I presume I shall soon learn either from Your Lordship or the Crown Agents the exact nature of the men and the agreement between them, but in the meantime I propose that they be paid at the rate above mentioned.
I have the honour to be, My Lord, Your Lordship's most obedient humble servant,
Seaveer Macdonnell Governor
