B. 1, and Eastern Shipping Co,
The information which wo published last evening, says the * Pinnng Unuette" of July 4, ro- garding the taking over by the British India Sto071 Navigation Company of the Eastern Shipping Company's steamer, was obtained from what we regarded is a reli- able source, but further enquiries which we have made to-day show that the announcement was, it all events, somewhat premature. Mr. Huttonbach, of the firm of Huttonbach Liebert, the Penang agent of the B. 1: Com- pany, informed, our represen tative that he "knew nothing about the pureliuse" of the East- ern Co.'s flot. Mr. Quah Beng Kee, of the Enatorn Shipping Compan, was also unable to con firm or deny the report. He stated that he was aware negotiations had been proceeding between the Home ropresentatives of the two companies, but he could not say with what result. In any case the whole of the Eastern Shipping Company's boats would not be transferred to the B. I. Company. Rumours are also current regard- ing negotiations between the B, I. and other local steamship com- panies, bit, up to the present, we have no reason to believe any thing in the nature of a deal has been completed.
Two Captains to one Ship. The Cunard Line have decided
to place two captains in various. ships, the second captain being: known as the staff-captain.p
The staff-captains, says a Lon- dan correspondent of the China Prose," are experienced man who have bean commanders of other" ships. Their duties will be to look after the crew and conduct [inspection and drills, so as to leave the captain more line for actual navigation. SEE
Hitherto in the company's mail steamers seven officers have boon carried in order that the olilet officor might be freed for such duties as the continual inspection
of every part of the steamer, the regular testing of all life-saving and safety appliances, and the porvision of boat and fire drills, all, of course, under the captain's order,
The staff-captain soljome was [ inaugurated with the sailing of the Mauretania from Liverpool on June 1, the staff-captain under Captain Turner boing-Capti 8. G. 8, McNeil.?In the Lusi fania recently Copt Simpso
