Pidgin Epg:Ish«g Conditions have changed com- siderably since the days when Pidgin English formed the only medium through which it was possible for intercourse to be carried on between the Western Ocoan foreigners and Car Ohinese. Pingia was the old Chinoso approximation to tho English word British. "--"The" author of that dooply interesting little book bearing the title of | The Fan Kwao at Cantón suya
It was undoubtedly an inven tion of the Chinese, and long anterior to the appearance of tho English at Canton in its origio, As may be proved by the admixture of Portuguese and Indian words still to be found in it, the latter having probably been originally made known by those primary visitors from the Western world via India. The English came more than a hun- dred years after; 'words from their language wore thien gra- dually incorporated and increas ed with the disappearance of the Portuguese, who confined them- selvas to their own growing Colony of Macao, until finally the former became the principal tradore, and thus this language bo samo known as "Pidgin English." Undoubtedly many of the words in this extraordinary langungo are of Portuguese and Indian origin.

The Siberian Mail. Many questions have been put to us this weak as to what is wrong with the Siberian Mail. It is dangerous to pose as walking. encyclopaedias, so the querists have been referred to the postal | nuthorities. Of course it is scarce- ly fair to credit the local staff with overything. The delivery of the mails is to the lay mind 1s difficult as the unravell-

A correspondent hazards the opia- (on that if a little business per- spicacity and method were intro laced it would be possible to de- livor the letters that come by the Siberian mail soon after arrival- papara and parcels, being delay- edso that replies to these com munications could, on many occa sions be forwarded north that same day.
