would, I am certain, by his residence here effect much good through his example and teaching, yet these are advantages which other candidates might equally offer. I confess, however, that looking to the peculiar nature of the duties, which a Resident Bishop would necessarily have to discharge here, it is very desirable that he should, if possible, combine with active piety and exemplary life, that thorough knowledge of the surrounding districts and of the native character, which experience and study have conferred on Archdeacon Gray.

Believing therefore that the Colony would possess in the latter a most useful holder of the Episcopal Office, I thought it right to inform Your Lordship by Telegram of his willingness to accept it, because I believe it to be for the interest of the Colony that he should be at least known to Your Lordship as a Candidate for the See of Victoria, if it be vacant.
