It is not only based on the daily information of the Chief Detective, but it is corroborated by the enquiries made by me of the District Watchmen.
I understand, however, that street gambling in Taipingshan has increased.

I have the honor to report for the information of His Excellency the Governor that little or nothing has been done by house gamblers since the 16th instant.
The Chinese at present are under some vague belief that severe punishment will be inflicted on any persons found gambling in a house.
