Jit rosult- od in increasing the wealth of the people, however, the evil effects |arising from the failure of crops would be greatly tempered. Soiontilio opinion has long decided that the wheat and ment eating races show the finest development and the greatest vitality. Of all the substitutes for wheat, that have been tried in

Europe, potatoes in freland, maize in Italy, oatmeal in Scotland, none has been able to take its place. The potato has been shown on reasonable grounds to have been the ruin of Ireland; and the drond- fal disease of pallagra has been tracod to the use of maize in Italy. At one time we heard a good deal about the reconstruction of | Canton, and two Chinese gentle- men who had been resident in America for some years were credited with being the pioneers of an extensive scheme to reform the place; the city was to be laid out on American lines. Probably. this is a dream of the past, and

while the time is not yet for the carrying out of any huge scheme, it is pleasing to find that progress is being made in the levelling of the old city walle and the exten- sion of the new Bund. Visitore to Canton of course are impressed with the need of widening the streets, and making the ten- mente more in keeping with, the sanitary laws of the western. world. However, this is a big project which must be relegated to the dim and distant fature. Chinese reports, however, are encouraging on the question of the construction of roads and general sanitation, for Peking during the past years has mada vast progress.

Another New Chinese Colf, President Yuan has been con- sulting Mr. Hatung Hei-ling, tim Minister of Finance, as to the de- sign of a new coin' to be common legal tender in business, as it a pears to bim to be lack of sporty that although the "Republic in u been established, about halfa year, there has been no coin to stand am her common currency. Mr. Holurg has ordered his staff to devise: u suitable design which is reported to represent a lion in a standirg posture on one side and on the other, the denomination and. date
