The Future of the Motor Ship..
On March 15* a paper by Dr. Rudolph Diesel, of Munich, ontitled "The Diesel Oil Engine› and its Industrial Importance, particularly for Groat Britain," was read before the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
Dr. Diesol said that since its appearance about 14 yours ago. tha Diosal ongina had been built.. by the thousand in the best factories of all industrial coun- tries, and had boon est up in tho most remota ́corners of the world. It had boon proved to be a ' most reliable engine wlion pro- perly bailt, the working of which was quite as safe as that of any other system of prime mover; in. general, it was even moro.simple, sinco it did not require any nuxi-. liary apparatas, and since the fuel in its natural and original form was directly converted into work in the cylinder of the engine. To-day the thermal or indicated ellloiency of the ongine was 48 por cont., and the effective or brake officioncy reached, in some cases, 35 per cent, of the heat
