Compulsory Education for India.
In Great Britain thoro are some 111,000 women to some 35,000 male teachers in the elementary schoole. India is scarcely pre- pared to follow that example;" but this, we imagine, would not constituto a serious difficulty in. Ludia. The preponderance of women in the schools in England is due to the fact that they do the work cheaper than men, So far as Japan is concerned, though thero ia legislative sanotion of the principle of compulsory educá- tion, that principlo is not in fapt required or enforced, for the people are keenly interested in education, and Sir Haroourt But- for informed the Council of India that 02. per cent, of the expendi- ture on education in Japan came from local taxation, and that edu- |cation was so. generally advanced and respected there that the ele moutary teacher draws a salary of over Rs: 50 per mensem on an average, as compared with about 8 or rupees paid to teachers in India.
