It is hard to believe that fog could actually rob a team of a well and truly scored goal. Yet

there is at least one instance on.

record of this being the case, It happened a good many years ago

in the season of 1874-5. The match was between the Wun- derers, a great team in those days, and Barnes.

There was fog at the start, which thickened rapidly. The Wanderers had all the better of matters, and had already scored threo goals. Then one of the Wanderers got away again, and scored another goal, But, as the fog was too thick for the reforce to see what had happened, the point had to be resigned.

It made little difference, low- ver, for the Wanderers even tually won by four goals to none. Another occasion on which

Stopped by Snow. Scotland bad the upper hamil all through, and that great player Robert M'Coll had already no fewer than three goals to his credit.

Towards the end of the latter half, M'Coll saw his chanco of a fourth. Ho shot, and the ball Dow wall and truly into the not, | a couple of feet above the ground. Unluckily, the net lay against the pile of hard snow, and the ball robounded into play. The referee, unfortunately, had not his eye on the ball, and, not only did Scotland lose a goal, but M'Coll lost the opportunity of scoring four goals in on. Intorua- tional match.

Snow, of course, line not infre- quently interfered with impor tadt matches, In that awful winter of 1879-80, which follow- ed one of the worst and wettest summers over known, the match between. Hondân and, the Old Forestors was twice postponed owing to snow. When, conclu- sions ware tried for a third time snow began to fall so heavily that the spectators could hardly see the players, and before long the ground was deeply covered.

The players stuck manfully to their task, although they were sliding and falling all over the
