"Not easy to get on with. In our committee it does not do to be 'always shuffling the old cards', and if we can get out a really good man, the infusion of fresh blood into the place would be a benefit. Is it worth while to make a query about a person sent out to take only part of the salary? Should he have the privilege of private practice? I think it much better for the colony that he should be kept up to the mark by the competition and experience of private practice.

What has been Dr. Marrago's salary? Has he been debarred from private practice?

ERW.

March 16/72 £800 & free produce. £700 to practice.

Colonial Surgeon £100 as Surgeon to the Lock Hospital. As to private practice it is a debatable question, but I incline to it myself.

At the same time I think the salary is rather excessive if private practice is allowed.

When Dr. Marra's pension is settled, on his retirement, and the question of the amount of salary is complete, this question of private practice is to be considered.

It would probably be better not to appoint de Boil, & I think that Dr. McCoy of Sierra Leone, would have a good claim to this appointment; but I will state in reply that Lord K. will cause a note to be made of Dr. Don's application, and will at the proper time consider his claims with those of other candidates, but that his Lordship cannot make any promise of compliance with Dr. Don's wishes.

I should rather wish to see less salary and private practice allowed.
