LOG BOOK.
The Rocket Apparatus.
The Board of Trade has just issued its roport on the working of rocket life-saving apparatus, for the year ended June 30, 1911. There is an introduction by Sir Walter Howoll, in the course of which it is pointed out that-143. lives were saved-by-rooket-ap- paratus and goar, during the twelve months. Such a figure affords remarkable evidence of the value of the service, and suggests that the men engage in it should be encouraged in every possible way. From this point of view it in agreeable to note that King George has been' pleased to institute a medal for long and meritorious service with the rocket life-saving ap- paratus. Already a system oxists under which spesially meritorious work is recognised, and this long corvirs modal should provo a natural and useful complement.
It is notablo that in not few e1809 communication with the ship
was obtained by the first rocket fired from the shore. In other instances, how- ever,
Toro was no difficulty Wo take at rinn casos in which the oighth, fifth, and tho fourth rockets respectively finally carried the line to its destination. There is the case of the barge Pioneer, reported from Corton station. In that instance it look

The moral of it all seems to ba that our racket and our lifeboat
common which have not so far been recognised, and that, though much has been done by the Board of Tredo and by the lifeboat In- atitution, there are still possibili ties of improvement. It is diffi cult, however, to mention the sub- ject of rookot apparatus without allusion to the caso of the Delhi' which appears to be a striking example of the need of some means of prompt communication with the shore. No doubt when a Board of Trade inquiry is held in this case we shall hear a good deal of the mat ter, for there is every reason. to think that the landing of the vessel's passengers would have beon facilitated bad she herself bean able promptly to pass a line (KING'S BUILDING Opposite Blake Pior)nshore.
