Your Lordship will observe that I therein mention your approval by Telegram of the Commission which I had issued before receipt of Your Lordship's Dispatch. - I am, moreover, still of opinion that it is fortunate the Inquiry was commenced without delay, because I believe it will be the means of satisfying the Public that the Executive had been generally quite alive to the expediency of improving and strengthening the Police force at all its opportunities.

It has, however, unfortunately been long the tendency here for the public papers to deal with almost everything connected with Government and the Police, as though the Community considered attacks on each existing Government as a sign of independence as well as a natural and proper course.
