The British 'Army.
We think it rather a pity that Mr. Bonar Law, the newly chosen leader of the Unionist party, ahould have thought it necessary to open his campaign against the Asquith administration with a violont attack upon the present equipment and condition of the British Army. It is merely a matter of political tactics we know and до reflection is intended on personnel henco all the more pity. But in the attempt to score a point off an opponent, however Mr. Bonar Law does really inflict a large amount of harm, while at the same, time serving no useful. purpose. The British Army being, when all is said and dono, the servant of the Domboracy, though strictly only under oath bound allegiance to the King, must expect to receive a certain amount of criticism, and on-the whole it is quite prepared for this as part of the disagreeables connected with its job. Bat wo think most people will agree that the amount of criticism to which it has been subjected since the olose of the Boer War has been most excessivo in quantity and on the whole, remarkably futile in quality.

Trade with the East.
One frequently bears the most pessimistic prognostications re- garding the future of foreign trade as the Eastern races develop these roflections being usually Basociated with a condemnation of all efforts made by Europeana to tenoli' the Asiatic Westora science. - This is often represented as 'teaching the Asiatic to oust the foreigner from the East," Japan is pointed to as the "awfal ex ample." In the last quarter of
a century Japan has made marvel- lous progress in many important branches of industry and has moreover provided herself with.
mercantile fleet, superior to that possessed by the majority of the European Powers. She has
bonefitted immensely by foreign, instruction. But what has been the effect of all this on the foreign trade of the country? If we turn to the official statistics of the country's foreign trade it will be ason that this trade has increased nearly ten-fold in the last quarter of a century.
