With the new 13.5in. gun, however, we appear to be about to leap from a projectile weighing 1,250lb, to one weighing about 1,4001b., which will be quite as easily handled with hydraulic machinos. This is a very important development in the early stages of the life of this now and powerful piece of naval ordnance, and will bring us more in line with the German gun-makers, who generally use a Larger projectile, in proportion to the calibre of their pieces than are used by us, their 12.01-in. guas, for instance, firing a shell weighing 9811b. as against the 850lb. of our 12-in; while their older 11-in, guns use shot weighing as much as 700.6lb., and secure a muzzle velocity of 2,835 feet per second as against a velocity of 3,000 feet by our latest 12-in, guns: Witha 1,25015,
