Japanese Bulbs. The export of lily bulbs and other flower plants to America, Australia, and other foreign coun tries is increasing year after year, the total annual value of exports nowrenching over 1,000,000 yen. The increasing demand abroad offers very promising, prospects for the particular trade. One regrot, however, is that on 2c- count of injurious worm, para. sites are often found in our exports and the shipments aro spretimos rejected or destroyed. by fro by the authorities on their arrival The Gorerumont autho- rities, with a view to developing the export traile, have decided to enforce measures for the provon- tion of the parasites while investigating the conilition of the demand for gonds in foreign, markote. As a first step, the Government Jian ordered the Kanagawa experimental farņu to consider proper uisasures for tho prevention of the parasite nuis aaoo, "conforing bounty of 1,000 yen for the purpose.
Com-
- Japan's-Trade with China, Tho "Chagai Shogyo," menting on the extraordinary "condition of Japan's trado. with China; spys that while there has bson a great decrease of exports of cotton yarn and collon textiles to China; it cannot be denied that the revolution in that country han called forth fresh demäude for some particular lines of in the good-hitherto not
list of export itens to China. Such are biscuits, tinned provi¬ sions and caps. The list men- tioned article has been in great demandand because of the Chinese discarding their queues. The jour- pal therefore suggests that all those concerned in the trade with Chins look for goods that will suit the changed condition of life there. When the now demand is dullod forth in China, it will last many years if the goods are supplied to them on satisfactory, forme. But if they fail to satisfy the Chinese, substitute for the Japan
so goods will appear. This, for example, has been the caso with the huating caps. It appears that the goods were not quite satisfactory, and the German goods have driven away the Japanese from the Chinese markets, The journal warns the merokouts not to resort to a penny-wise and pound-foolish" policy in regard to the trade with China.
ON A RAFT.
A Mysterious European Disappears.
From Johore there comes a vague story of a mysterious disappear- anco of a European about thirty years of age, who seems to have been endeavouring to travel aloue Bouthwards along the eastern coast of the Malay Peninsula on small raft. He had apparently touched at one or two places on the coast en his way south, and ru- mour says that ho reached a point on the coast near a rubber planta-
tion. There the European man ager in charge made the stranger welcome, gave him a change of clothing and had him as a guest at dinner. Next morning in his old rig-out the mysterious etrang- er paddled out to sea on his little raft, the intention being un- derstood to be to reach Singapore. He would not.communicate his name, nor his destination, nor
where he had started from,
Since, that date the stranger has been missing and nobody.
