Australian impudence has never been better, exemplified than by the fact, as announced in n Melbourne journal, that the Australian Minister of Customs has inquired whether the mail ateamship lines will reduce their rates of freight in consequence of the impending reduction of Dd, por ton in the Suez Canal dues. Truly a naiva sugges tion, but why confine it to tho cargo side? Why not suggest that something be knocked off the passage money to Australia? We do not know exactly how the right amount should be arrived at, but perhaps the simplest way would be to apply the "5d. per ton" figure to the passengers DEAR themselves. So many tons of passengers so many fiveponces: If the Minister of. Customs can indicate any more satisfactory method, tho stoomship con- panies, no doubt, will be ready to give it consideration. In the meantime they lavo intimated that the idea of reducing their ratos of freight does not appeal to them. Aye, more, they have put the case quite rudely. They spoak of the burdens" imposed upon shipowners by the Labour Party in Australia, and, of the "increasing expenses "they layo to eat in that part of the world. Evidently their foolings have been hart; and, after all, it is quite easy to unilor- stand-their-irritation. It must be extremely unnoying, when they have been "bled" for many years pest, to find that an almost in- finitesimal sokoning in the strcom is being made the occasion for an outrageous demand by a third party. For all that, though; we cannot but admire the colossal choek of the Australian Minister of Customs. It is quite ovidont that the gentleman will never lose anything through neglecting to ask for it.The Syren."
