are not aware that any representa- tion has been recently made to the Government on the subject, either by the Harbour Master or the Chamber of Commerce, but the fact that one of the big Toyo Kisen Kaisha steamers recently when turning to leave the port got stuck in the mud and was delayed three or four hours shows that the question is Lone which will bear investigation. We have on a provious acraalau commented upon the need for deepening the western end of the harbour, whore some of the largest steamers are compelled to moor, but the authorities appear to rest satisfied with the report on a sar- vey mide by the Admiralty six years ago. H.E. Sir Matthew Nathan stated in the Council m 1900 that the report had satisfied him, and be understood it had satisfied the Chamber of Com moree also, that the harbour was aot appreciably silting up.
