The aggregate importation of Persian and Turkey Opium, during the last two
turing
years, consists of about 4000 Chests,
or
4000 piculs of the former,
and 2,000 Chests or 1,000 piculs of the latter. This description of Opium being
in favor
at the treaty ports, the principal

portion of what has been imported, has been sent up to the Coast and Northern ports. Only a small quantity, say,
250 Chests has
gone
into
Consumption in the South.
From what
we have
stated above, it will be
evident to Your Excellency that the allegation
of smuggling put forward
from this port, is
a
secondary plea, in as much as it is the native craft, stated above, which import
into native ports for
Opium
