aforesaid total of importations, which are susceptible of proof balance of there remains a chests 22,001 to 24,290 piculs of Opium. From this quantity is to be deducted the unsold stock held by foreign importers the 31st ultimo, viz. 2000 Chests or 2,300 piculs. Thus there appears a final balance of 20,001 Chests, or 21,990 piculs which must have been exported by native crafts to the consuming ports, during the said period of two years; consequently that quantity must have been imported into such places, which, though not open to foreigners, are as much under the rigid government of mandarins as the treaty ports.

Sticking to an annual average of the above stated quantities, the result is as follows: Annual importation of Malwa and Bengal Opium, 10,390 Chests; and annual exportation, in foreign bottoms, 69,389 Chests.
