In Hongkong a much larger proportion of the destitute and those enfeebled by disease, is found alive than dead, though many are in extremes; and if I were to draw any inference from the slight glimpse afforded by the above return, I should infer that the number annually perishing at Macao directly and indirectly is nearer 1000 than 500. My belief also is that of those, who perish, a large proportion would have been entitled to return passages to their homes, if it had been as easy for Vice Admiral Lazzaro to give practical effect to his benevolent intentions as to proclaim them.
