Japan and Eastern Waters In view of the determined bid which Japan is inking for the supremacy of her shipping in the Far Eastern waters it is surprising to learn that the Japanese Govern inent are making arrangements to withdraw the subsidies from the linos running on the Chinn coast. They have called, it is stated, for reports from officials concerned, with a view to shutting off the sub- sidios paid to Japaneso shipping companies engaged in coastal navigation, such as the lines to Kyushu, Dalng, Slakalin, up the Yangles Iliver, and to the China ports generally, whose contracts expire noxt your or tlie your after, and of forcing the Nippon Yusen Kaisho, Osaka Shoson Kaisha and tho Nissin Kisen Kaisha, after the present term, to maintain these lines without the assistance of the State.
