TIENTSIN TRADE IN 1910.

THE WATERED COTTON SCANDAL

In his roport on the trade of Tiontsin during the year 1910 H.B.M.'s Consul-Gioneral, Mr. H. E. Fulford, C.M.G., states that the total exports of raw cotton from Tientsin during 1910 amounted: to 145,627 piouls (10,410,933 lb.), ne against 25,120 piculs (3,350,- 133 Tb.) in 1909.

Unfortunatoly the trade is bo- ing epoilt by the methods of the nativo dealers, who not only mix seed and leaf with the staple, but have adopted the plan of soaking to stuff in water, to increase the woight, to such an extent thint when bales have been opened solid lumps of ice have boon found in the middle. The romedy, of course, lios in the foreign buyers agreeing to rofuse all such cargo, but it seems that the prosent demand is too great to allow of any such agreement being made.

A British firm at Tientsin took a firm stand in the matter and has thrown out of its godown cotton found in this condition, but the rejected material has immediately been bought by another (probably

Japaneso) firm.

The total export of wool from Tientsin during 1910 was 174,933 | piculs (23,324,400 lb.), as against 204,160 picule (35,222,133 lb.) in 1909. The figures for camel hair aro 23,525 piculs (3,138,666

STEAMSHIP CO. lb.), as against 24,706 pionls
