RUMOURED CABINET

CHANGES.

In adical and Labour cirelos. usually well-informal respecting Ministerial intention, there is a revival of the rumours of impond- ing Cabinet changes, and il wealth of detail counts for any thing, the latest story would appear to be better founded han some of its prodecessors.

The story runs, says the 'Lon- don correspondent of the "York- |shiro Post," that there is a section of the Cabinet whosco difficulties ahend over the preparation of the schome of Poor Law reform, to which the Government is commit tod, and aro, therefore, anxions that there should be a change at the Local Government Board.

It is an opon secret that the re- lations between Mr. Jolin Burns and his more advanced collerigues argnone too cordial, and the Inttor are crodited with sharing the fears of the Labour party that any scheme of Poor Law reforma put forward by, Mr. Burns will" bo anavceptable to a large section of Tol phones: Milorieto Omico 538, nr 575, Customs Brauch Office 1302, the supporters of the Ministry in

THE CENSUS OF THE EMPIRE.

EFFORT TO OBTAIN COMPLETE FIGURES OF POPULATION,

Through the Colonial Office the English consus officials have been-- communicating with the consis officials of the Over-sca Domin ions, Dependencies, and Crown Colonies in order to obtain statis- tics, as complote ne possible,' of the population of the whole Em pire. Sheh an inquiry was under- taken for the first time ton-years ago, and the result was published in a-large Blue-book in 1906. Tho principal table there printed showel a total of 308,101,701 in- cluding estimated or partly estimated figures for many places, in some of which to census had boon taken. The total was made' up thus:

United Kingdom, 41,458,721: Isle of Man and Channel Islands, 150,370; other European areas 472,502; Indian Empire, 204,301,- 056; other Asiatic prinsessions, 6,208,808; Wost Africa, 28,992,- [165; South Alrien, 0,074,527;

other African regions, 7,362,095; ' North America, 5,013,200; West Indios and Central America, 10:1,100 South America, 298,149; Australia, 3,830,151; New Zealand, 810,214; other Australasian possessions, 542,370.

As a result of the present st tempt it is hoped to obtain, not only a more completo enumon tion, butamore uniform classifica tion of the vast and varied brotherhood united under. tho British King and the British flag.
