4. I was therefore extremely glad at the expiration of his original term of 3 years in 1870 without completion of the Praya Reclamation works. I at once renewed his engagement & three months later he unselfishly & willingly made a fresh agreement.
I could thereby retain a valuable working staff at a time when the damage done by former mains through I form to the sea wall & fare & quay of the City of Victoria independent of the work at the reservoir rendered it very important that the Colony should command the services of an experienced practical working man like Mr. Sydd.

6 _ The latter expressed his readiness to remain in the service of the colony on completion of the decisions with the Crown Agents ( vide letter of 29th Jany 1867) on condition that the clauses in his original agreement with the Crown Agents should be maintained and also that in the event of his services being dispensed with on his arrival in England he should be paid his full salary up to such a period of the year as would ensure cheap passages "out" & "home" in England in the ensuing or summer months.

I did not think it prudent to grant any reply to the latter request but I was quite willing to hear from Mr. Sydd on the subject and I could absolutely count on reemploying him, either at the reservoir or any other public work whilst awaiting a passage to England. I knew well the advantages of being able to use his high professional skill, especially as his passage out had been already paid for.
