Ende good progress. It is expected that Tralos will be running on the British section, between Hongkong and Talpo, by the middle of toto, while on the Chinese section 31 Bexhillet will probably be ready for traffic 10 September, and work is proceeding so well that it is hoped through communication may be opened in the summer of 19ti." The value of the 'direct trade with foreign countries la tgoo reached a total of 757 150,881 tacle, exceeding the total of 1908 by 85.98 million lace and the bigbest total bitherto recorded that of 1907 by 76 million taels. Foreign imports amounted in value to 418,158,067 taois, showing an increase of 23.65 million tacis, and exports to 338,991,814 Incls, an in- create of 6a million tacs, Concerning the foreign oplum imports into China it Is rather curious to 'note that there show an increase instead of a reduction such as one would have expected to find considering the additional restriction put upon the traffic and Great Britain's undertaking to de crease her exports of the drug from In- dia by ten cent. every year for ten years. There was a act importation of 48,917 piculs of foreign opium, giving an increase of 570nce, 1897, (No. 1 of 1897) was approved. piculs as compared with the previous year's import Of Bengal drug, 2,225 piculs more was imported; of Malwa, 1,476 piculs less; and of Persian, 171 picula less The slight choring off West rolur, and the fact that officere increase of importations is due in part to and man of the Merc.nile Mariae fad difficulty excited speculation on the yet greater scarcity to engaging sampant in that neighbourhood, to come. Hongkong market prices, in will the Government consider the ad imbliity January and in December, show that Malwa of erecting dear the Sailor's Home a light bam had risen by the end of the year to 10 2000 nier, to serve as a recognized landing place per cent, according to quality; Patua, 28 andar police control?
· per cent ;. Begares, 39 per cent.; and Per- sisp, 29 to 37 per cent.; and it may be added that by the middle of March 1910 Houg kong prices for foreign oplum were twice as high as in the beginning of 1939. Native oplan has more than 'kept pace with the foreign drug and is reported from several of the maritime provinces to have doubled its market value during the year; while the price of Szechuan opium at Chung king rose in the year's course from 200 to zag tacla to go to 550 tals, or 147 per cent, Coastwise movements of native opium through the Foreign Customs, which of themselves do not at this stage throw much light on the general question, have continued without noticeable change. Owlog to a sud den demand at the end of the year, and it is said to an expectation that the downward movement of opium from Chungking will 5000 be forbidden, the quantity of Szechuan and Yunnan opium pasing Ichang was as The Attorney General moved, the Coloulal great as in 1908. So long, lowever, as opium Secretary seconded, the first reading of a 'Dill is grown to the western provinces at all,, or entitled An Ordinance to secure the betteritain- apy of the old stock remains, it will gaturing of Midwives and to regulate their practice. ally gravitate towards the richer provinces of the lower Yangteze and the South. Customs, reports confirm the statements which have appeared the public press from missionaries and others in regard to the reduced production in Szechuan and Yunnan. The Mentsz Commissioners says that the suppression of the traffic in opium, in this province must be recognised as thorough even by the most aceptical, And the Commissioner ai Chungking, while admitting that a good crop had been gather ed during the year, fiadu, in consequence of a decisive prohibition in the autumn, "there can be no doubt of the fact that a clearance of the poppy on à most extensive scale bas been effected." Importations of kerosene oil, which has become almost a necessity in Chinese houses, fell off by zoper cent. Various reasons are assigned for this reduction. but the most probable seems to be the conjunc tion of its increased price will an abundance of vegetable oil; also, electric lighting has been installed in many Chinese cities and is in high favour as an illuminant. A sign of the times may be discemed perhaps in the value of imported beer, wines and spirits. This amounted to 2,073,790 taels, an increase of nearly one million taels as compared with the year 1908. This appears to indicate that "foreign spirituous liquors are destined to take the place of the prohibited opium, With regard to shipping, the total entries and clearances 208,516 vessels, 86,771,809 tons -give an increase of git vessels and 1.73 million tons. Chinese, vessels of foreign type increased their total tonnago by 791,000 tous, chiefly on the Shanghai-Ningpo line. On the whole, the returns show that during the past year the trade of China has enjoy. ed very material prosperity and that there is every prospect that in the remaining portion of the current twelvemonth this satisfactory state of things will continue.
