NOTES BY THE WAY,
THE GENTLE ART OF VEILED SARUASA.
This week, I am driven to the uDSATOULY task of prefacing my "Notes" in a somuwha! lachrymosa manner. In troth, I am inciload to shout out from the home-stops "Weep, my brothren, for the age of wit is dead." At lam weak's mesting of the Legislative Council, Mr. Marray Stewart was the author of a refreshing bit of sarcasm, and this is where the sub comes fa-not a singla member thought it funny, to judge from the serious expressions they wore on their decor. lo fact, Mr. Stewart's laboreal wit was lost on the desert air, so to speak, the wit being expressed in the sentiment that there was really no hurry in the matter of the stop ping up of roads, for the very simple season that an idea did not suddenly dawn on ear's mind for the elevation of a roadway and that therefore the necessity of immediate action was practically non-existant, But Mr. Stewart went much further than that. sis said that he could quite understand special provision being made in the event of an "earthquake" bui hardly otherwise, An earthquake indeed! We bave enough to do with a railway, which, to put it mildly, has proved extremely costly to the Colony, Colowas pirates, and weird phan toms of strange man-eaters prowling about in Kowloon to the dead of night without the gealle excitements of an earthquake. But to return to the point, it is certainly remarkable that the idéa did not seem ticklish to members. Perbaps, like the proverbial Gael, they roared out into a loud guffaw on discovering the Rabalaisian humour of their collesgue after the lapso of twenty-four hours.
'EARTHQUAKE..STORIES,
While on seismic toples, revives a train of thoughts in my mind connected more or less with earthquakes. First and foremost is the allegorical representation which has always appealed to my mind afforded by the Frisco earthquake and the New Law Courts, Bus where, the reader might ask, and with good reason, is the connection? The connection, gcolle reader, at the flak of being accused of redondancy, is simply this -that whereas San Francisco was built before ons could say "Jack Robinson," so to speak, the songkong Law Courts after about seven years of teart rauding fuss still vaguely loos before our dis- tracted imagination as a bright ornament of the Future-mind you the future only, spelt with a capital F. Meanwhile, the disgruntled individual fumes and fress, quae uselessly, of course, but not inconsistent with natural in- ftincts.

-SLANDERS IN HONGKONG.
TO, THE EDITOR OF yua “Horizons Telagiani," || 5lt,—With reference to your leader in your Thursday's Issue ament the abors subject. I would like to endorse, from personal experi
ce, the remarks contained therein. I have -down men to discuss their dequsidiances in iba clab-roum ant other public resort and rake their "pass" in a manner which would have bean enough to make the poor victim squirm with indignation. Of course, if these contemptible creatures acted at least with what might be termed a temblance of being "fair and above board, although that to itself would be indefensible, the injustice of it would not be so great, but without fear of-con- tradiction I have not the slightest hesitation in saying hat in the majority of cases these men deliberately set ant to introduce strange opisodas láto one's "past," wall knowing and taking advantage of the victim's absence, which eliminates such a possibility as the "fatter's defence, that would sound strange to the victim himself. Personally, as i have always con- sidered that those of your acquaintancer who recount to you strange tales about another for your edification are the first to make you their victim no sooner your back is to rund on them, It has pleased ms to shua thele company as i would the devil, for such people do not deserve to be termed men. Let them remember Shakespeare's lines: "Speak no slanders up, nor listen to it" but I fear to their vulgar minds sach sentiments have no measing. The game of standering one's neighbour may be good snough for old women and ancient spinsters in the absence of a better and more profitable engagement but av o relaxation to people who profess to be what they are certainly far from baing, it is cospeakably dispicible and the fact that it should almost be reduced to a fat art, in Hongkong as elsewhere, is distressing io.ibe extreme-Yours faithfully,
DECENCY,
Hongkong, 6 h August, 1910.
