THE COTTON SITUATION IN

As a Tule it is difficult' to arrive at a correct climate of the stock of cotten in Bombay on a given date, but the estimate of the 1st Octo: ber last is probably the nearest ever made, an the unsold sick and mill stocks were then so low, that the difficulty of entionation was reduced to minimum. We may, therefore, infer that the actual stock of cotton on that date in all hands (ie., mill stocks, exporters mock, and unsold stock) did not exceed 200,000 bales, Paul Natel was said to be a Greek who de- and that a reliable beats on which to work scribed himself as a slockbroker and 'a'man of fopre estimates was then obtained. From the above it will be seen that the stock of cotton on ref October/bis year will be prac- tically the same as it was last year, and as our estimate of receipts from now until the 30th September, may be takes as the maximum, while our estimate of shipments for same period will be the minimum, the stock will probably be less than the figures we give. It should be remembered that this stock will contaio a fair percentage of pomerchantable collop, as a large amount of moin or less raib-damaged staff has reached our market this year. We can scarcely hope to see new crop cotton available for mills in October as the small arrivals of Fengals which may be expected that month will be chiefly on exporters account. Mills would therefore do well to replenish their stocks while there is yet time, as cheaper cotton is not The dactor lock L:00 worth of Nundydroog in sight, and the chances are distlactly in options, and also seen East Rands.

TAB KING OF THE COCOSE:

The Times obituary notice of Mr Olunlar Ross adde some bitberto unpublished details.:— The islands were discovered in 16:9 by Caplain William Keeling, after whom the northern sto!! was named. The southern

& or Tacos group appears to ows its nomencla: ture to the Dutch. Their history begins with the landing there, in 1815, of John Clunies Ross, the grandfather of George, who found them uninhabited: Mr. Frederic W. Joans, in a book shortly to be published under the title of "Coral and Atoll," sketches the history of this remarkable man, of his scarcely less ra. markable son and grandson. The family took. refuge in the Shetland Islands after the Jacob ite troubles of 1715, and there John Clunies Rost was born. He led an adventurocs son- faring life for some years, in the course of which he fell la with gas Alexander Hare, the eccentric son of a wealthy London watch: maker, upon whom the East had cast its spell, and whose dream it was to live the life of an Oriental monarch.

The motives of the two were very diffèrent. Haro bad fallen into bad grace with his farmer employars, the East India Company, and was glad to seek a secluded portion of the globe where there were no creditors and no critics of his mode at life. Oluaiss-Ross, as a lover of the sea, desired a sea-gist home; but ba bad also a commercial aim io view. In those days Hastern spices, coffee, and pepper found a ready market but the craps arrived at the coast only twice a year, and the ships engaged in the trade bad to await thecouveufquce of the pative merchants, since no reserve stocks were kept. Clunies Ross thought that a man might buy very cheaply when crops were abundant, store the produce, and sell it at great profit to home ward bound merchantmen. The Cocos Islands ware to be his place of storage, and 'hly vessel, the "Borneo," was to convey the produca be. tween them and the Malayan group.

The plan, however, did not work, and Clunies Ross turned his altention to the coco. palms of the island and their many useful pro ducts, particularly all. These products still constitute the sole commercial asset of the islands. A theving industry was soon ret og foot and prosperity attended the seitsers, desplie

Hare, who treated his people as personal slaves, constant quarrels listween the rival chiefs,

Boon found bis facilon diminished by desertions to the other camp, and many of his: women were carried off. Finally he retired to de lo Singapore, bis courtiers, miusicians, barem, Rod slaves having vanisžed. Clunies Ross Iben lald claim to the whole group, wh ch be ruled for 27 years, dying in 1854. The last years of his life were devoted to study and philosophica} writing. It was during his "reign" that Darwin visited the islands in the "Beagle" in 1836 The great pajura'ist does not seem to have. been very favourably impressed with the con Iditions he found there.
