AUGUST

PROCLAIMED AT CANTON,

SELF-GOVERNMENT SOCIETY INITIATBÓ

·PROPAGANDA.

[From Our Ohpiù Corresfondant.],

Canton, 2nd August,

A meeting was held yesterday at 7 nm, of the Canton Balf-Government Society at which there were present several hundred people. The latter received by the Soci-ty was read balore the assembly. It gave rise to consider abis discussion, resulting in a rasoitation being parsedtothe aft set that a boycott be re-instated, from the date of the meeting as a protest against the Americans for their differential treatment of Chinese on their arrival at San Francisco. It wan also resolved by the meeting that tele- grams be sent to Chinesa in all places in Chins and those abroad in foreign coaution, Inviting them to join in the boyroll movement and urging them to maintain a firm stand is the matter until such time as the American Exclu sion Law shali have baso modified in accord. ance with the wishes of the Chinese.

(It is rather remarkable that on this occasion the Chinese commercial organizations in Hong kong bave not yet been advised of the boycott or asked to lend their assistance in carrying it out. Several of the leading Chinese in the Colony, interviewed today by a representa. tive of the Telegraph, professed entire ignorance of the boycot having been instituted. Ap parently the Hongkong organisations have not been approaches directly by their Sam Francisca compatriots as they wore when the last American boycolt was set on foot and there appears to be a disinclination on the part of the local merchant groups to take a lead from the Self-Government Society of Canton. The next few days, however, will doubtless bring enlightenment on the subject.].
