Theia bricks in every case were. of mere cop. 'pos, with just a plug of real gold, into which the obliging assayist drove his scoop, extracting ́a sinall portion for general inspection. 'The as' sayist, of course, reported in the most entbu siastic terms, and the victims, carrying the geld bricks, went away, apparently charmed with theis noriferous fature.
One of them, who lived in Cleveland-squares London, surrendered £5,000 after the "gold" bar had been tested, nod took the bar away as security. He paid one detective £ a day to watch it by day and another a similar amzuat to watch it by night for four days and nightti and then be sailed to Kogland, and paid the steamer stoward a substantial som to watch it on abipboard. Arriving to London be took it to an assayer, and found it to be worth exactly Bs. 61.

The body of Sydney Lascelles was cremated to-day (May 26) and the ashes were handed to the sister-in-law of the first of the deceased's | reported sixtees wives. Lascelles wasa zoving, buccaneering Englishman of good appearance and romantic disposition, who made love wherever he want, and. after marrying, absconded with the booty. He posed nude, various aliases, his favourite title belonging usually to soms member of the Engilsh Peerage, though on occasion he would crop bp as an Indian duke or area' count of the Holy Roman Empire.
His favourite aliases were Lard Beresford and plain Charles Asquith. He spoke several languages, and could bavo secured bonest em- ployment in an office; but he detested work of a routine character. He had a natural gift for courtship and intrigue, and although there is a record of only sixteen wiyas, it was stated before the police-court" "where, he was arraigned an common thiet and swindler, that he had married right and left indiscriminately for years.
