VISIT TO THE ITALIAN CONVENT,

31st ull,

The Italian Convent in Hongkong was bon- oured by a visit from His Highness the Maharajah of Mourbhanj shortly before noob. to-day. The visit to an establishment which, by reason of its wide functions of a benevolent and educational character, almost assumes the features of a quasi-public institution, denotes His Highness' interest, not only in the beautiful sights of Hongkong and its lodustrial and com." mercial Institutions, but in those also having for their object the care of the poor, the upbring log of the young, and the forming of character by an educational system adapted strictly in accordance with. Govermental requiremeals,

On arrival at the Convent, His Highnes was received by the Superioress, Mother Teresa Martinoin, His Lordship Withop Pozzoal and Chevalier Z. Volpicatli, Consal General for Italy In Hongkong, who takes a very lively interest in the work and development of the Italian -Convent schools,

At the invitation of the Superioress the Maharajah made an lespoction ofthe school and throughout the orphanage, bojß in its Chinese and European sections. The kindergarten and Infant class rooms, werd the first to be visited, and as usual'on such occasions, the distinguished visitor was pleased to note the bright and cheeriol faces of the tiny "toss" who.regarded their surranadings and employ. ment with a happy coautoaance. The classes of the primary schools were then visited and u few questions from the visits clicited in formative answers Irom the teachers add in telligent replies from the girls themselves. Crossing aver from the old Chvent building to the new and siately stricture on the grounds of "Rasebill" the higher standards Were good brough, the beautiful chapel with its decorative stained glass windows being a subject of note èu route. The visitors could not fail to observe the spacious caracter of the falty class rooms which provide our only ample floor space for the number of scholars in sach, but are so thoroughly well lighted and ventilated that make them the vary models of apartments of the kind in a large day and boarding school like the Convep!.

At our last mosting reference was made to the cost of wooding, and I am glad to state that our anticl. pations as to the reduction we expected to make have been more than realized, the cost last year being Stogo lass than to 19of, although an additional area was taken in. The company's own hospital has bees in use for some months with mast satisfactory results, as there has and list of sick, and the bospital is rouch ap been a marked improvement in the death-rate precisted by the coolles. The supply of labour is satisfactory, and the manager reports that the general appearance of the estates has much improved.

PROSPECTS.
