HEARD CRIES OF HELP.

According to the story told by an eye-witness, oo whose narrativ› the atmost reliance can be placed, it appears that shortly after seven o'clock on the night in question, as he was returning home from a visit to the Opium Farmer, he heard cries of Thieves!" and "Save life!" ensuing from No 4. Queen Victoria Street. At the same time, Portuguese youth who heard the shouls was seen to make his way into the house for the purpose of giving assistance.. In this respect, it is noteworthy that among E crowd which must have nomibered hund. reds, the Portuguesa "lad was. the only per son who, thought of going to the victims' aid. The others, consisting mainly of Chinese, gave the scene the distur bance a wide' barth and weleri inclined to believe from the indifferent annad: that "they would not have badged an inch bad a

murderer tried to escape the arm of the law. under their very noses.

FOUND A KNIFE ON THE STAIRS.

The youth bad not proceeded for up the fight of steps leading to the room whence the nolie procended when he stumbled across a dagger of the common type, which must have been dropped by the robber either through fear of his being captured with the weapon in his posses. sion or in his hurry to escape. A few moments later, he saw & Chibamon who attempted to escape but with remarkable presence of mind be clutched at the 'min's coat and he'd hle tightly, at the same time blowing n Patice whistle which ha. fortuna ely carried on his person at the time.' in this connection, it is an extremely, fortunate circumstance that the robber did not have the weapon with him, at the time, as there is no telling to what

·lengths he would have Kaneio his desperate attempt to escape and, as likely as no we would have had the painful duty of recording a double fatality in these columus, The man, as we have raid, spared no amount of effort to release himself from bis youthful. captor's hold, but the latter stuck to his prey with bull-dag tenacity, and with pluck far be yond his years, and all'attempts on the past of the robber to escape proved bopeless and tctile..--

CHINESE DETECTIVE ARRIVES. Within a quarter of nahour from the blowing of the Police whistle, 'n Chinese detective arrived on the scene and between the (way they'sacured the robber, who struggled desperately to obtain his freedom. At the same time, an ambulance was sent for and the injured inmates of the house.. were "removed to headquarters and shortly afterwards taken to the hospital for treatment:

ROBINRY SUPPOSED TO BE THE MOTIVE OF THE CRIME,

There can be little doubt that robbery was the motive of what can only be described as B daring outrage. One disquieting, feature about the affair is that the prisoner was not the only man to' enter the dwelling but gained access into the lessment along with seven or eight olbers who have since.esesped. As far as wa have been able. 10 ascertain, the robbers had by some moass ex other come to learn that there was money in the house and entered the. place to carry out their nefarious place at what they considered an appostans, moment. It is scarcely necessary, to remark that the Police will leave no stone usturned with a view to bringing to book the rest of the culprits, who have constituted themselves a terror to life and property,

}

HAD PEPPER THROWN INTO HER EYES. In the course of to-day, we learn that the lojured man, whose arm was cut to the bone, had succumbed to his injuries. This led

to inquire for particulars of the fate which befell the other twa women. Оде of the women the daughter-io-law of the de- ceased man is now in hospital. It appears that hearing the cries of her aged relation, she proceeded upstairs to find out the cause of it' and suddenly about half-a-dozen mea threw a quantity of pepper into her eyes. The other woman, who lived on the ground floor, was more fortunate, and escaped with a passing blow from a kuile inflicted by one of the rob beri. We understand that nothing has been stolen from the house.

FRISONER IN THE POLICE COURT. The man who has been arrested in connec. loo with the above affair was this morning charged with wilful murder at the Magistracy, At first, the charge preferred against the man was one of attempted murder, but on beingʻie... formed ofthe old man's death inspector Mursson, who is in charge of the case, rad the charge altered to one of wilful murder.

ATTEMPIÈD SUICIDE" BY YOUNG WOMAN.

JUMPED INTO TIE HARBJUR FROM STAR FERRY LAUNCH.

30th uk. The strip of water between Hongkong and Kowloon was almost the scene of a tragedy yesterday. It appears that while the ferning Star was proceeding on her usual trip across the harbour, a young, native woman suddenly jumped into the water. The Star Ferry Lianch was unable to proceed to the woman's res cue in time owing to difficulty in turning round, but the coxtwain of the steam-launch Victor, on seeing the young lady's plight, promptly jumped into the water and soon go the creature on board, none the worse for a thorough dreaching. We understand that the coxswain of the Victor is already in possession of a certificate for life-saving and this fresh demonstration on his 'part will most likely be Iakon notice of. This morning, the woman was charged before Mr. E. R. Hallifax with attempted suicide Mr. Otto Kong Singap peared for the defendant and on the repres estation of some friends the defendant was dia- charged with a craign
