"KING, EDWARD" VII.
TRINULES IN TH HOME PRESS.
The following extracts from lobdidg atiicles on the death of King Edward VII. may be of
interest.
"THE TIMES."
It was bis-siecare devotion to the cause of peace and hin labod's in its behalf which, did'] ruest to secure for him the high place be held in the good opinion of foreign peoples, 25, indeed, they added vary greatly to the love which hit subjects bore him. In the support of that cause be was sometimes brought of aeces sity into opposition to the aspirations of other nations and to the policy of their Governments, but save in transient moments of popular passion, no country could ever doubt that the motives of his conduct were just and pacific'.. Few diplomatists have understood more per fectly the value of manner and of tact in the couduct of even the greatest affairs, and fower still bave possessed in so exquisite à degree tas fine art of employing them with invariable discernment. To ascribe to his personal initia sive and management either the general course of our foreign policy during his reign, or even a decisive voice in determining it would be to charge bin with a departure from bis rightful position as a constitutionat. King. For such a chargh there could, of course, be no possible foundation. Ja foreign, as in home affairs, he loyally respected the limits which law and custom had set to his activities. But that course, none the legs, was taken with his assent and with his help-notably in the conclusion af the entente with France and in the improve. ment of our relations with Russia, and bis wide personal acquaintance with the Sover MADRAS MUSLIN of Europe, their Ministers, and their Courts undoubtedly made his help singularly effective... It was. all the harder for she King to take up the successiva without turfeiting some share of the authority which abe (Queen Victoria) had command, because during her lifeume he had not received much encouragement to associate himself closely with the serious work of the State: That he was alive in the mistake which had been made in his own case, and to the disadvantages to which it exposed him, is shown by the care ho has taken that it should not be repeated in the case of his son, King George V comes to the Throne with all the knowledge of public affairs and all the training in them which it is

When King Edward came to the Throne all men were conscious of the eading of an epoch and of the beginning of a new ono. should pass without his personal
personal participation in it. ⠀⠀ Over and above the vigilance which be. axercised over State ́buxiness, and which made. overwhelming demanda on ħlu energies, was this ceasaless attendance at all publle fane- tions, which identified him so pecallarly and Intimately, with his people, His sympathy, with the poor and suffering was intense. And because he shared the nation's joys as well as its auxieties, because he lived in the sight of all and not in remote retirement, no King had over a desper hold upon bis subjects' affection. 351)

The strength of the English throdels the fact that it le broad-based upon the people's will. .The great achievement of the dead Klug, as it. was the achievement of his mother, was that he was able to represent the ambitions and aspire- tionsofbli poople more fully and more complais- ly than any politician or any statesman. King Edward was Great Britain, and Great Britain mourns as for hersell. We have always felt THE P. & O. S. N. Co.'s Steamer all of us, Unioniste and Liberals, that do the Kiög there was a telerra of windus, not to be lightly drawn upod, but always ready when the exome difficulty aruse. And now this national refuge is no longer ours. "Death's inexorabla hand draws the dark curtain close." It is some- thing to know that the whole world will sorrow by the biar of the dead King. This is, after all, the finest tribute to his work.
"THE DAILY NEWS."
On ascending the throne, the King bad not so easy place to fill. The long preceding reign had seen, in the end, the growth of a special sentiment which some thought would be peculiar to the person of a Quesa.. The reign of a King could not be the same would the new Sovereign ordain for himsel as that of a widowed. 2000. What sphere
his mark? Such were the questions which What place would be fad in which to make
averyone asked at the beginning of the late reign. King Edward answered them from the first, and he has hooded down to his succes- sor, maintained and in some respects en baaced, the glorious inheritance which he received from Queen Victoria. We 'mourn 10-day not a universal favourite, but a great King. Of the personal reputation ar corded to his lato Majesty, by his contempɔ<. aries there can be us doubt, King Edward in the first diplomatist la Europe. The King of England will live in history is one of the most statesmanlike monarchs who had worked in an efficient manner for civilization Bud peace." Such are the verdicts of Continentat judges.
