drop a portion of their ill-gotten lool. AP: parently with the intention of scaring away ony would-be pursuers after them, the thieves fired one round from their revolvers in a parting salute to their hosts whom they succeeded in relieving of some of their money.
A few minutes after the man had decamped, na alarm was raised by the gaming house keepers, but the police ware nowhere. to be found, at any rate, gone answered to the cry for help, and the robbers are still at large.
ANOTHER "HOLD UP":
A second "bold up" took place the following morning, on Tuesday, in this case the cir- cumstances are even more serious, since the perpetrators of the outrage are said to be Euro peans and strangers to Macao. Shortly after midnight on Tuesday two Europeans entered a gambling house in the same street of the previous night's raid. They pretended to visit the house with the intention of trying the Juct. As soon as they got hold of the croupier and were in the act et compelling the mao to part wib all his "cash," a Chinese boy, a fukt in the house, realising the evil design of the foreigners, began to scream qui "Save life," "Save life." One of the inen who carried a knife with him dealt a blow with of the boy's arm in-order to silence, the foki, but as the latter, psied by the wound, re doubled his energy in calling out for help, the cowardly ruffian stashed his hapless vicitin on the arm, luflicting several pasty wounds. Foiled in their attempt to rob"the house, the men bol:ed out into the street and were lost to sight. Again the police, ware non est, and so fario arrests have been made.
The Chinese boy was removed on an am- balance to the hospital, where his wounds werIC dressed. The injuries, though serious, are not likely to prove fatal.
A THIRD OUTRAGE,,
The third case, of armed robbery in the city of Macao within two days. occurred in the Travassa de Palma, just below the Hotel Doa Viata. Considering how badly patrolled this secluded district is, it is lila wonder that the' robbers' managed to carry on their nefarious plan and succeeded in eluding the eyes of the Police... It was known that a well-to-do Chinese lady was occupying one of ibe small houses in Chunambeiro. A little before four o'clock on Monday morning two burglars armed with daggers managed to secure admission into the bonse. Seizing the defenceless jamate, they asked her io naud' over all her money and valuables. Refusal to comply with the demand would, they said, meat, instant 'death to her. So as to induce the woman to yield, they at the same time produced a murderous looking dagger with which they threatened to kill her, Freightened beyond words, the woman gathered
togelber a precious hair ornament sel in
valuable pearls, a gold hair pin and sundry pieces of jewellery, all" of which she sur- rendered to the burglars. When they had safely tucked away their loot, the two meo beat a busty retreat leaving the poor woman in the houre'minus her valuables. Soon after she rushed out to the street and called for the police who were conspicuous by their
absence.
It is far from creditable that such outrages could be perpetrated in the very heart of the City without the members of the palice force being anywhere neat at band to reader as -mistance, when help was urgently wanted.

The silver market has shown great strength during the week and from 74 1/16 quoted 01 the 8th instant the price has advanced almost without reaction to ~44 which we quote today. The rise has chiefly bern due to an almost continous stream af orders from Ind a, whren, bob in Bombay and Calcutin, operators, are tating a very good view of the future of the market, based as far as we can tell, not only oo, the picient prosperous state of the country, but alan on the iden that 'e Indian Government might buy in the near future,
Although the Goveron en cia baidly be rx pected to appear as buyersfor soma minths in "come, another gand moniona would ensure their appearance before the end of the presant year, and it is only natural that operators should already bɩgia to take an interesi in the market..
⚫ke undertone remains fim and there is not much prospect of any important reaction, but China ratei have failed to respond to wür rise and considerable safes of silver bare hard effected from that quirter as a result of the im- ́pinved condition of the import trade. Unless the China rates show tone improvement it is difficult to see how the price can go much bigher for the present, as a further advance would doubiles induce siles from Chios lol. lowed by shipments of Sycee.
Win the exception of about £100,000 for the India, the Bank succeeded in securing the Continent and the usual”lugo requirements of whole of this week's prrivals. The receipts there for the week total £404,000 in Bara nd 1,572,000 in Eagles from New York, while the withdrawals amount to only $3,500 in Sovereigus.
