We do not knaw the extent of his resistance and what work of a Gæbt he put up against the terribin temptations which surrounded bim. But we know he de- voted to bis Emple's welfare that, wise, good discretion which ripe years brought him, Edward the the Seventh entered into a rayal iaheritance enriched to the uttermost by the wisdom of his mother. I would like in pay a tribute to our late King which would be expressive of my own feelings oad of his church, but I confess that the information which came yesterday to me was such a shock that it is with the utmost difficulty that I can command words or thick of the phrases which will be necessary for the tribute which we wish to pay. Depend-rain, and King Edward, instead of walking A violent norib-west wind has brought cold But upon your sympathy, will try to say a few words. The personal influence may be potent for

went for a long drive to the pine woods. ours. It is certain to have immense power in directly biddeo, safeguarded by lonumerable channels. A constitutional monarch advises out of the fulness of his experience. Many a president of a republic has far more pawer thas, the King of Great Britain. Whether bis advice' be taken or not depends as much on his per sonal influence as on the wisdom of his counsel. Character, after all, is a most potent factor in life, and especially so in the person of a king, The preacher then referred to the assiduity with which King Edward made himself acquainted with the affairs of the Empire, paid a tribute to his wisa statesmanship, and spoke of how he was regarded as a devoted king. He lived long enough, be continued, to learn much, and he lived long enough to harvest the wisdom we admired. He learned much because he was eager to do his best for bis.psople. He not only enjoyed all his privileges, but King Edward was eager to discharge all his high datins as a man, as a neighbour and as king. Our late King's word was powerful. He was not a great reader. Ife'did not learn much from books, but he interpreted life truly, and he gave more than most men to the world in which he was placed. Our late King was powerfal as one who was personally able, and here it is I must fall back on some lecidents of his life which came under my own koo ledge. The preacher then referred to his life in Norfolk, whare the King lived as a country gentleman. He saw him very often at close quarters, and had opportunities of learning something of the true greatness of the mas. He instanced the King's tact and consideration, aï seen in little incidents in that countryside, and spoke of his marvellous memory for faces and names. Proceeding, he also alluded to his bankomis, how he mixed with people, and how he reproved certain modern teodatcies in fashion. able life. Appeals to sympathy always tound a ready response la him. Moreover, he was many. sided. Military men, naval men, and civilians all claim him as their own. He was a successful arbitrator working for peace in Europe, and be has brought nearer possibility the United State of Europe. In his successor, who as conde the throne at forty-five years of age, shall we not pray with him that his experience may make him a wise, sober and industrious king, such a monarch as his father was?
The service concluded appropriately with the Dead March in Saul" played at the organ, AT THE ROMAN catholic cathEDRAL.. Being the Month of Mary, the congregation at the Roman Cathedral yesterday, ai the Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, was larger than usual. Rev. Father G. Spada, the acting Rector, at the evening service voiced the regret of the Catholic com- munity, on the occasion of the demise of His Majesty the King. He dilated on the cable character of King Edward and his laudable efforts in the establishment of universal peace, which bes won for him the admirable epithet of The Peacemaker." Ha specially extolled the sympathy of the late King for his subjects throughout the British Empire, and referred to bie broad-minded tolerance, which has made him and his memory dear to one and all.
In concluding his touching, sermon, the Rev. preacher asked the congregation to unite with him in imploring the blessings of the Almighty on the new Sovereign, King George V., that he may long be spared to con- tinue the good work of his father, whose Dame will be banded down to posterity as "King Edward the Peacemaker; King Ed ward the Good."
